This is also a profession that involves at least one arm being held up through most of the day. Muscles that run from the shoulder to the neck are in contraction for much of the day as they hold the arms up. These muscles pull on the vertebrae where they attach to the neck and over time can even result in pulling the bones out of alignment. In any event the tops of the shoulders will be knotted and painful. Because the arms are held in front of the body continuously throughout the day, the shoulder blades tend to wing out to the side creating tension in the upper arms and a deep ache in the whole shoulder blade. This occupation also creates a lot of neck tension. This is partly because of the stress of the raised arm, but also because the chin tends to be tucked throughout the procedures. The technicians body is often at on odd angle with the pelvis twisted, usually toward the same side, and the torso bent forward. These uncomfortable and unbalanced postures are held for much of the workday, resulting in hip and lowback pain as well as pain between the shoulder blades and at the lower portion of the ribs. Although young hygientists may be relatively unaffected, after ten, twenty or more years these postures create chronic pain if nothing is done to counteract it. |
